Possible Timeline

Post by The Fire Stirring Ruby on Mon Oct 12, 2015 7:03 am

Man, I have been waiting for ages to post this. It took quite some time, effort and mainly calculations to piece this one together. This is already a rather comprehensive timeline, in my opinion, despite that it does not include the years where Otomes in Sifr's time enter Garderobe.

Note that this is just a mere speculation and is not, in any way, canon. This timeline assumes that the events starting from Mai-HiME did occur in 2004, the Ikusahime Festival happens every 300 years, and Corals are roughly 14-15 years old upon entering Garderobe.

Spoiler:

  • 1704 - This is the HiME carnival where Mashiro Kazahana won. It is mentioned that her older brother was her most important person, who also happens to be the vessel of the Obsidian Lord at this period.
  • 2004 - Events in the Mai-HiME (anime) occur.
  • Some time before A.R. 1 (First year of the Immigration Era) - Human race transfers to Earl, with most of Earthling technology. Kingdoms were established.
  • Some time after A.R. 1 - The Searrs Foundation changes its name into Schwartz.
  • A.R. 31 - The War of the Twelve Kings occurs. The war, in my opinion, is orchestrated by the Schwartz, as it was their promise (back in 2004) to commence an attack 300 years later. You may see the Mai-HiME episode 15 for reference.

The Harmonium is used to destroy much of Earl. It also warps the time and space at the Black Valley, causing it to become "lost" to the people residing in it, later to be known as the Aswad. The Aswad are "cursed" as their holy land becomes missing.

Fumi Himeno ultimately stops the war, becoming the First Otome.
  • Some time after A.R. 31 - Fumi Himeno erects Garderobe. The Schwartz and Aswad probably joins forces.
  • A.R. 255 - John Smith (of Sifr's time) is born.
  • A.R. 265 - Monica Julen and Sylvie Mosse are born.
  • A.R. 266 - Maria Graceburt is born.
  • A.R. 269 - Branquin, Aswad's leader of Sifr's time, is born.
  • A.R. 272 - Elena Fran, Sifr's mother, is born.
  • A.R. 279 - Monica Julen and Sylvie Mosse attend Garderobe.
  • A.R. 280 - Maria Graceburt attends Garderobe. She becomes Monica's room attendant.
  • A.R. 281 - The War of the Dragon King happens. This war is noted as the last war that the Otomes attacked each other in anger. Monica Julen and Sylvie Mosse dies, as well as their masters (Argos XII from Chaldea and Marc Antoine from Florince, respectively).
  • A.R. 282 - Maria Graceburt graduates. She probably takes on an administrative position at Garderobe.
  • A.R. 284 - Una Shamrock and Bruce Blan de Windbloom II are born.
  • A.R. 285 - Irma van de Velde and Bel Flan Artai (the Grand Duke of Artai during Sifr's time) are born.
  • A.R. 286 - Kyoko Tsumabaki and Kid (John Smith in Arika's time) are born.
  • A.R. 287 - Rei Juckernaut and Shiro are born.
  • A.R. 289 - Rena Sayers, Elliot Chandler, Raquel Mayol, Zion Margaret, and Sakura Hazakura are born.
  • A.R. 291 - Sifr Fran is born.
  • A.R. 295 - Reito (later known as Rad in Arika's time) is born.
  • A.R. 304 - Rena breaks her first GEM.
  • A.R. 305 - Elena Fran dies. Events in Mai-Otome S.ifr occur.
  • A.R. 315 - Rena retires as Windbloom's Blue Sky Sapphire.
  • A.R. 316 - The Windbloom Castle raid occurs.

Mashiro (Blan de Windbloom), Nina Wang, and Arika Yumemiya are born.

The Schwartz and Aswad may have had a falling out, ending their partnership.
  • A.R. 330 - Events in Mai-Otome occur.
  • A.R. 331 - Events in Mai-Otome Zwei occur.

Many of the information above came from the Mai-Otome S.ifr website. Information about the Wars came from Some-Other-Wiki Wikia page. Mashiro (Blan de Windbloom), Nina, and Arika's birth year came from Mai-Otome. Immigration of Earthlings came from the Mai-Otome manga (despite it being different from the anime).

I only have the ages of the characters in Mai-Otome S.ifr. I'll just include it here as well.
Spoiler:

  • Sifr Fran: 14 years old
  • Rena Sayers: 16 years old
  • Bruce Blan de Windbloom II: 21 years old
  • Elliot Chandler: 16 years old
  • Raquel Mayol: 17 years old
  • Zion Margaret: 17 years old
  • Una Shamrock: 21 years old
  • Irma van de Velde: 20 years old
  • Kyoko Tsumabaki: 19 years old
  • Rei Juckernaut: 18 years old
  • Maria Graceburt: 39 years old
  • John Smith: 50 years old
  • Kid (future John Smith): 19 years old
  • Sakura Hazakura: 17 years old
  • Bel Glan Artai: 20 years old
  • Branquin: 36 years old
  • Shiro: 18 years old
  • Reito: 10 years old

It is mentioned that Rena, Elliot, and Raquel are classmates.

That's an interesting topic :)
I would like to know much more about the links between the two series, what happened inbetween...

I just have a few questions :
- What mean the initials "A.R." ?
- Why do you think that the "War of Twelve Kingdoms" started in A.R 31 ? I would be glad to know if there is any clue about that that I forgot. (this is a sincere question, not an attack or a blame)
- How many time do you think it was between the events of Mai HiME and the emigration on Earl?

You forgot to mention that Nina was found by Serguei in 325 After Immigration (according to that paper that Nagi was reading in Mai Otome), and she was 9, so she's born in 315 or 316 (which is persistent with what you wrote).

Wow, Rena is only 16 years old in Mai Otome Sifr? I didn't think she was so youg!

Do you have an idea of Shizuru and Natsuki's age in Mai Otome?

* I have yet to find out. I mean, you can also check out the Mai-Otome S.ifr EP 1 and A.R. shows up, but there was no meaning whatsoever. I'll do some extensive research about it.

Antiope wrote:- Why do you think that the "War of Twelve Kingdoms" started in A.R 31 ? I would be glad to know if there is any clue about that that I forgot. (this is a sincere question, not an attack or a blame)

* Ah, I got the imformation here, if you're wondering. Then, it was a matter of subtracting 300 years from the current timeline. Technically, it would be A.R. 30 but it's really a give or take year.

Antiope wrote:- How many time do you think it was between the events of Mai HiME and the emigration on Earl?

* It would probably be some 260-270 years later, if I were to base on my speculation. After all, I mentioned in the master post that I think that the Schwartz orchestrated this as the fulfillment of a promise.

* Thank you for noting that! I'll edit the master post when I include some information from Mai-HiME.

Antiope wrote:Wow, Rena is only 16 years old in Mai Otome Sifr? I didn't think she was so you(n)g!

* Me either! I mean, she looks like in her twenties, in my opinion. I was totally in shock when I checked up the Mai-Otome S.ifr website.

Antiope wrote:Do you have an idea of Shizuru and Natsuki's age in Mai Otome?

* Frankly, no. It has been up to debate in the forum (you can check it here if you're curious).

But, I do remember Nina saying on EP 11 or 12 in Mai-Otome that the Legend of the Tragic Meister wasn't too long ago. If that's the case then, Natsuki and Shizuru would probably be just somewhere in their late teens (18 - 19) to early twenties.

I watch the series with french subtitles so I've never noticed "A.R" ^^
I think it was simply written "After Immigration" in my version. I'll watch Mai Otome Sifr soon again, I'll look at it carefully (not now, I'm too lazy to search for it ^^).

Ah, thanks for the link. However it's a wiki so it has been written by fans, isn't it? We cannot be sure that everything is correct.
I also wonder if, when they say it was 300 years ago (which is said in the anime, I remember that), it is an exact number or if it is a way to say "it was around 300 years ago" ? I don't know if it's the same in english but in french we sometimes ommit the "around".
I do have an official artbook/guidebook for Mai Otome, there's probably a lot of interesting things in it, but it's written in japanese Razz

Yes, I remember their promise. And I completely agree with you that the Schwartz are the descendants/heirs of the Searrs.
But I think the 300-year interval was not really chosen by the Searrs, it was a special feature of the HiME Festival. They just promise they would be back for the next Festival. And since the HiME destroyed the HiME Star, there shouldn't be any Festival after that. (That's why I don't understand why Rena and Mikoto in Mai Otome and Mai Otome Sifr are HiME too...).

I remember this topic (I just didn't remember it was you who created it ^^).
I've read in different places that some people believe they are 19-20 years old, other think that they may be 25-26... It's not easy to guess the age of an anime character!
Sometimes Natsuki is acting like if she was so bored after years and years of managing the school ^^ Shizuru and Natsuki seem to have some experience so I think that 19-20 it's a bit young. But after all, if Rena is 16 in Mai Otome Sifr, why not!

Mai has the same age than Natsuki, so yes, anyaways, the Legend of the Tragic Meister was not very long ago.

And still about the characters' age, I guess the students don't enter the school at the same age (maybe they can try to pass the entrance exam several times ?). We know that Arika and Nina are 14 at the beginning of the anime. Yayoi seems younger. And on the other hand Chie and Akane look older than 15 or 16!

Judging by the internal evidence, backed up by Antiope's comment which suggests that the "A.R." system dates from immigration, rather than another starting point (such as the foundation of Garderobe), it is, in my opinion, likely that the Twelve Kingdoms War ended sometime around A.R. 30. It's not necessarily definitive - for example, when they're exploring the tunnels beneath Fuka Castle, Mashiro tells Arika that Fuka has stood for "about 300 years," before discussing Fumi's role in ending the war.

The Fire Stirring Ruby wrote:Some time after A.R. 1 - The Searrs Foundation changes its name into Schwartz.

Interesting. Is this canonical? I always imagined the Shwartz as one of a number of factions competing for recognition as the true heirs of Searrs. They have a number of commonalities (the penchant for unimaginitive codenames and a fondness for terminology derived from Norse mythology), but also a number of differences. In particular, Miyu has no affiliation with Shwartz but acts as a guardian for what is probably the Searrs bloodline represented by Lena & Arika (Sayers looks a probable variation on Searrs), some of Shwartz' most steadfast opponents. Another one of those intriguing mysteries that I love in the Mai-verse.

Like I said in my master post, this is just a part of my speculation. In other words, no, it is not canonical in any way or form possible (at the moment).

I always thought that the Schwartz are the descendants of Searrs. For one reason or another they changed their name, or the name evolved with time. Or maybe they are a branch of the Searrs and they are now the only remaining group (if there are others heirs of Searrs we don't know them).
But it seems obvious that the Schwartz come from the Searrs, for all the reasons you mentioned + the fact that their technologies are quite similar.
As for Miyu, she's a special case since her only objective is to protect Alyssa and then Alyssa's descendants. At the end of Mai HiME Midori said that she didn't erase her memories and she didn't reprogram Miyu when she woke her up. So Miyu's objectives didn't change during all these years. Miyu doesn't care about the good and the bad, she even doesn't care about who created her since she killed her creator (father Glear). But it's interesting to note that her beloved Alyssa was with the "bad people" whereas her descendants (Rena and Arika) are with the "good people" (it's not written in the DNA !).

"Sayers" coming from "Searrs", that's an interesting idea. I've nerver understood why Rena is sometimes called "sayers" and other times "Yumemiya"! In first episode of Mai Otome Sifr, Rena introduced herself to Sifr as Rena Yumemiya, but later in this episode the blonde leader of Schwarts (Kid) called her Rena Sayers... Why ?

Thanks for the clarification.

The more I think about it, the more I think there's a parting of the ways after the establishment of Garderobe. Shwartz as they exist in the series, with their opposition to Garderobe's monopoly on scientific research, would have to postdate Garderobe's founding. I imagine that, in the wake of the Twelve Kingdoms War, two opposed parties in the scientific community emerged. The one, which accepted the new reality, probably joined Garderobe's research staff, whilst the other continued their own research on a clandestine basis, eventually becoming the Shwartz of the series.

Also, the Shwartz (like the Aswad) claim a connection to the Black Valley and both groups have names meaning "black" (from German & Arabic respectively).

Antiope wrote:But it seems obvious that the Schwartz come from the Searrs, for all the reasons you mentioned + the fact that their technologies are quite similar.

I also think that the Shwartz also have powers derived ultimately from the Obsidian Lord: their "Black Light, god of knowledge and wisdom" may well refer to this entity. For example, when a Slave Lord summons a Slave, their irises turn yellow, similar to Reito when he's possessed by the Obsidian Lord: -

Slave Lord

Reito

(Of course, Reito also displays yellow eyes in Mikoto's memories: -)

The Slave Lord's pupils also become cat-like, which is a sign of possession during use of the Slave (as noted by Shizuru in episode 13 when she encounters the Slave Lord below): -

The same thing happens to Sifr when she's using her powers as a Weaver, suggesting a possible connection between the Minagi bloodline and that of the Wind Bloom royal family: -

It must be noted that Nina's eyes don't change colour when she uses the Harmonium, though her pupils do become cat-like (this is less evident on the DVD so I'm using a screencap from the fansub): -

The Slave technology also potentially has common ground with the GEMs: both appear to require DNA confirmation before activation (compare the Master kissing the GEM with the Slave Lord needing to supply a blood sample during summoning): -

Clearly, the Aswad found a way around this, probably out of necessity (of all the Aswad shown with slaves, only Midori is organic).

Another interesting thing I've noted is the eye of the enigmatic Slave Lord from Sifr when she's using her Slave: -

The sigil appearing where her left eye would be is highly similar to that on Earl's moon after Miyu's removal of Otome restrictions in episode 26: -

It also bears a lesser resemblance to Lena's HiME symbol: -

This sigil appears to have its basis in Searrs iconography (thus proving another commonality between Searrs & the Shwartz): compare the table at Searrs HQ from HiME episode 15: -

Lena's seal would appear to be a hybrid version of the Searrs logo & the standard HiME symbol, which ties in well with her being a born HiME descended from Alissa.

It's also worth mentioning the PRINCESS symbol from the mangaverse. They were of course artificial HiMEs created by Searrs whose ranks included Alissa & Miyu if memory serves: -

All of this leads me to wonder whether or not the correlation between the Twelve Kingdoms War (fought with more conventional & sci-fi weaponry such as aircraft, mecha & androids) and the 2304 HiME Carnival is overstated: the only confirmed HiME in the Otome-verse is Lena (Mikoto notwithstanding), whose floruit was AR 305. Perhaps the HiME Carnival led to the war...

Of course, if any of this comes across as overly dogmatic, please feel free to crack a rock over my head. Please bear in mind that the small-to-medium ones don't really do the trick any more!  Think

Excellent point. Many thanks for the reminder!  Happy

What's your take on the girl with glowing hair in episode 24? If she's Alissa, she appears to be living on Earl, which could have implications for developing timelines linking the two series...

Hmmm... good question. In my opinion, Lena Sayers is the name by which she is known in her capacity as a Meister. When she introduces herself as Rena Yumemiya, she's masquerading as Bruce's maid. Yumemiya is probably equivalent to a mother's maiden name which she took to distance herself from her life as an Otome which caused her so much anxiety.

BTW as a part-time classics nerd, I like your username! Happy

Ruby-chan, I have a question. Do you recall the episode where Midori confronted Mashiro about the girl named Mashiro Kazahana who died in the excavation accident? Does that have any place in this timeline or any relevance?
