The Kyoto-ben accent disappearing?

Post by Kuga Natsuki on Fri Aug 24, 2012 10:16 pm

Discussion thread! Luu gave me the honors to make a thread all about the Kyoto accent, since I told him that the Kyoto-ben tradition is unfortunately disappearing:

"However, because of the influences from standard Japanese and Osaka-ben, traditional Kyoto-ben is gradually declining except the world of geisha which attaches importance to the inheritance of traditional customs. For example, one of the most famous Kyoto expression dosu e, instead of standard desu yo, is used by a few elders and geisha now."

DAMN YOU, OSAKA.

Is the Kyoto-ben accent your favorite? Why? ^o^ I can see why the Kyoto-ben accent sounds rather sexy, especially when Shizuru (or Naomi Natsuki Kruger2) speaks, since Kyoto-ben is often regarded as elegant and feminine dialect~ Shizuru Kaichou

I've always been aware of the kyoto dialect long before meeting Mai-HiME's Shizuru Fujino. I've just never took interest in researching it because my love for learning cultures wasn't the greatest at the time. XD Osaka-ben tends to be the most common accent in most of the anime I owned at the time.

When I entered college, Mai-HiME finally debuted, so I finally got to hear a character who used the accent. Kyoto-ben is a stimulating tongue; Shizuru is a prime example of that. It's a real shame it's considered an old traditional custom, I find it so elegant and beautiful to listen to.

I'm not even a fan of the Osaka-ben accent XD The Kyoto-ben one is so pretty and feminine ^o^ It became my favorite Kansai dialect thanks to Shizuru XD She makes it so sexy o.o *wipes drool*

XD I'm sick of the Osaka-ben accent, I hear it everywhere! Azumanga Daioh, Card Captor Sakura, Sailor Moon...give it a rest. @o@ Kyoto-ben isn't common to me, none of my anime or manga features a character who speaks it. Just Shizuru. <3 And her "haters" wonder why she stands out~

Anime need moar Kyoto-ben D: I guess Shizuru would just be a one-of-a-kind character for now XD

Anime should get a male character speaking with a Kyoto-ben accent XD

Kyoto-ben is also my favourite accent. It really is a shame that it's less and less used.
Kyoto-ben is such a beautiful, elegant and feminine accent. Notably when it's spelled by our Kyoto beaty Shizuru Kaichou .
People tend to package it in their "traditional box", in the far end of their attic.
I have heard some random sencondary characters (I don't remember in what anime) also speaking Kyoto-ben, but it wasn't the same thing. It wasn't really highlighted...
Shizuru is the only one I know who uses constantly Kyoto-ben, and very well pronounced. Shindou Naomi is a really great seiyuu. Thank you to preserve traditions Mikoto Minagi !
This accent suits perfectly Shizuru.

And her ~Ikezu~

I would like to learn this accent, but well, I'll start with the basis Razz . Maybe in some years...

Shizuru would not have so much appeal without her Kyoto-ben, at least for me. But then, her voice in general is sexy as hell, the dialect just adds to it <3

The fact that it's becoming less common is sad, but since it is considered quite traditional I can understand why younger generations might deviate from it. Just look at your own language, I can almost guarantee that you don't talk the same way as your grandparents, or great-grandparents. Languages change over time, not always for the better, but it's natural.

Here's to hoping that it doesn't disappear completely.

*Idly hopes that this makes some sort of sense since she's not really with it right now*

Imagine if Naomi was at an anime convention here. We should ask her to speak in her Kyoto accent through the entire panel kawaiidesuplz

>.> Sorry, fangirl moment

True story about the dialect and the language changing throughout time, Koi. Here in the States, we don't speak like we did back in the 1700s xD But the words still survived; we just don't speak that way. Hopefully the Kyoto-ben accent would be like that at least ._. Have, hath; desu, dosu. So on Akira Okuzaki

I would fangirl all over the place if that happened...in fact I would probably fangirl before she even spoke, but that's not the point XD

The different word use is a dialect, not an accent, by the way...just a little nit pick of mine XD

But yeah, I'm sure that Kyoto-ben will survive on some level :3

TBH the first time I heard Kyoto-ben, t'was from Shizuru..and I hated it xDD

It was a pain trying to decipher what she was talkin about and it frustrates me to no end!

But I agree, the complexity of the accent is one of its attraction. It's a shame to know that it's dying though...youngin's nowadays should learn to appreciate their culture before it's too late owo

Yeah, I've heard that translators have a hell of a time trying to translate what Shizuru is saying a lot XD

My ex did the translation for our Mai-HiME EXA releases. She described the kanji for Shizuru as the biggest pain the ass in her entire translation career. XD

She slowly deciphered Shizuru's dialogue. XD I recall all those nights watching her work on it. We don't speak anymore, but I will happily say her work is immortalized at MM forever. Most of all, still appreciated.
